"I was born in northern British Columbia, Canada, grew up in northern Alberta, first on a pretty remote sheep farm, then in a small town. My father was a working cowboy. Various grandfathers and great grandfathers had been sailors, cowboys, soldiers, gold miners, homesteaders etc., so my influences growing up tended to be embellished adventure stories from times long gone. This makes me feel older than I really am.
I went to art school at ACAD (The Alberta College of Art and Design) Calgary. I did lots of printmaking in art school, and after. Silkscreen, linoleum cuts, wood engraving. I'm really into vintage stone lithographed and silkscreened posters. i'd love to try lithography.
I lived in Scotland for a while, I've travelled a bit, to Turkey, Italy, France, England, Scotland, Australia, The United States, Mexico, New Zealand, Fiji, The Cook Islands, Hawaii. I drove across Canada once - it was a long way.
I listen to music while I work, to KCRW out of Los Angeles, which I really like. I've been listening to some really great mixes by Morgan Page. I live with my partner Fiona Richards who is a designer and owns Cartolina Cards. We live on a rural property just outside of Nelson B.C. which is slightly remote, but beautiful place to live. I like to ski and, in the winter, try to get a few runs in most mornings before I head to the studio. We get a lot of wildlife around our place, bears all the time, and I saw a bobcat a few weeks ago.
Living in the country is great but I love contrasting our rural existence with visual refueling trips to Vancouver, Seattle, New York, Rome, Paris. I love the big cities of the world. I like drawing, as opposed to say, painting. Or golf."
